Britain's Sauna Boom: UK Searches for Saunas Hit New Record

New analysis of UK Google search data reveals a category-wide surge in British sauna demand - with ownership-intent queries now outgrowing health-benefit searches for the first time on record.

We analysed 46 sauna-related UK Google search terms across 48 months (April 2022 to April 2026), using data from Google Ads Keyword Planner via the DataForSEO API. The picture is clear: UK sauna demand has nearly tripled. The yearly average for "sauna" has grown from 36,567 monthly searches in 2022 to 91,708 in 2025 - a 151% increase - and the early 2026 run rate of 103,500 per month suggests the curve is still accelerating.

"Sauna near me" has grown even faster, from 23,222 to 97,000 over the same period, hitting 110,000 in January 2026 alone. Every major sauna keyword analysed - with a single exception - grew by double or triple digits. And increasingly, Britons aren't just searching for saunas. They're searching for how to buy one.

Study Highlights

  • UK searches for "sauna" have grown by 151% from 2022 to 2025 (from an average of 36,567 to 91,708 monthly searches), peaking at 165,000 in January 2025. The early 2026 run rate of 103,500 per month suggests further acceleration
  • "Sauna near me" searches hit an all-time UK high of 110,000 in a single month (January 2026), up from a 2022 peak of around 30,000.
  • "Home sauna" searches have overtaken "sauna benefits" for the first time on record - a shift from research to purchase intent.
  • Ownership-intent keywords are growing faster than education keywords across the board: "home sauna" +173%, "outdoor sauna" +176%, "garden sauna" +191%, versus "sauna benefits" +46%.
  • "Sauna blanket" searches grew 199% (1,467 → 4,383 monthly), becoming the gateway product for Britons priced out of a full cabin.
  • "Sauna weight loss" is the only major sauna term in decline (-19%), as the conversation moves from fat-burning myths to recovery, ownership, and lifestyle.
  • Every major sauna term peaks in January, with the seasonal spike getting sharper each year.

The Scale of the Boom

The single most striking number in the dataset is the rise of "sauna" itself as a UK search term. In 2022, it averaged roughly 36,000 monthly searches. By 2024, it had more than doubled to 94,000, and in January 2025, it hit 165,000 - more than four times the 2022 average. "Sauna near me" has followed the same trajectory, growing every single year of the window and reaching 110,000 in January 2026.

This is not solely a seasonality artifact. The comparisons use yearly averages; the effect holds across every month-to-month comparison we ran, and even adjusting for the partial 2022 baseline (the dataset starts in April 2022, so January 2022 - typically a peak month - is excluded), the underlying growth still runs in the high double digits to triple digits.  It is also not a one-or two-keyword story - every keyword in the core awareness and discovery clusters has moved in the same direction, at the same time, at roughly the same magnitude.

From Research to Purchase: The Ownership Intent Shift

Underneath the headline growth is a more interesting story about how Britons relate to the sauna. Four years ago, "sauna benefits" was the biggest non-generic sauna query in the UK, averaging 4,889 monthly searches versus 4,411 for "home sauna." Britons were, for the most part, Googling whether saunas were good for them. By 2025, that order had decisively flipped: "home sauna" averaged 12,025 monthly searches versus 7,158 for "sauna benefits."

It's not just "home sauna." Every ownership-intent keyword in the dataset grew faster than every research-intent keyword:

Not a single ownership-intent keyword grew by less than 120%. Not a single research-intent keyword grew by more than 50%. The intent category has shifted wholesale: Britons have stopped asking whether saunas are worth it and started asking how much one costs.

The City Split: London's Boom, Edinburgh's Flatline

Regional UK search data complicates the "Britain loves saunas now" narrative in one important way: not every British city is going through the same shift. London, unsurprisingly, is the demand hotspot. "Sauna London" searches grew 143% over the window, peaking at 12,100 monthly searches in January 2025. Bristol and Manchester moved in step with the national trend. Edinburgh, uniquely, stayed essentially flat - just 6% growth over four years.

Two things make the Edinburgh outlier interesting. First, the city started from a high base - "sauna Edinburgh" was already the biggest UK city-level sauna query in 2022, roughly equal to London at the time. Second, unlike everywhere else, it hasn't grown. The most likely explanation is that Edinburgh already had the sauna infrastructure that the rest of the UK is only now catching up with.

Infrared Has Gone Mainstream

Five years ago, "infrared sauna" was a niche wellness term in the UK. Today, it is the third most-searched sauna keyword, behind only "sauna" and "sauna near me." UK monthly searches for "infrared sauna" have nearly doubled from about 10,000 in 2022 to just under 20,000 in 2025. "Infrared sauna benefits" grew 177% over the window. And "sauna blanket" - the bedroom-friendly, entry-level version of the same technology - has become arguably the single most important product in the UK sauna market from a demand-signal perspective, with 199% growth since 2022.

*Figures marked with an asterisk compare the first six months of the window to the most recent six months, for lower-volume keywords where full-year averages are sensitive to noise.

The pattern here is that price is no longer a barrier. A full outdoor Finnish cabin is expensive; a sauna blanket costs a few hundred pounds and fits in a wardrobe. For a large share of the new UK sauna audience, the blanket is the first product, and the outdoor cabin is the aspiration.

January Is The Sauna Month

The final pattern in the dataset is seasonality. Every UK sauna keyword analysed peaks in January, and the peaks are getting sharper each year. "Sauna" hit 165,000 UK searches in January 2025. "Sauna near me" hit 110,000 in January 2026. Against a June or July baseline of less than half that, January accounts for a disproportionate share of the category's annual search volume.

The combination of New Year wellness resolutions and genuine cold-weather appeal creates a single dominant demand window, roughly from mid-November to late February. Outside that window, interest is still growing year-on-year, but the absolute volumes are substantially lower.

For brands, retailers, and leisure operators, the implication is simple: if you aren't at peak inventory, staffing, and marketing by the first week of January, you've already missed most of the year's demand.

Methodology

Data was collected via the DataForSEO API, drawing directly from Google Ads Keyword Planner for the United Kingdom (location code 2826, language code "en"). The dataset covers 46 sauna-related keywords across a 48-month window from April 2022 to April 2026 - the maximum historical window Google Ads Keyword Planner exposes for any given query.

Keywords were selected to cover six intent categories: core awareness ("sauna", "saunas"), discovery and location ("sauna near me", "sauna London", "sauna Edinburgh", etc.), ownership and purchase intent ("home sauna", "buy sauna", "garden sauna", "outdoor sauna"), types and formats ("infrared sauna", "barrel sauna", "sauna blanket"), benefits and education ("sauna benefits", "sauna after workout", "sauna vs steam room"), and a small set of adjacent comparison terms ("cold plunge sauna"). Non-sauna wellness categories, including standalone cold plunge and ice bath queries, were excluded from the core analysis.

Search volume figures are reported as Google Ads monthly averages. Year-over-year comparisons use full-year averages where available (2022, 2023, 2024, 2025) and partial-year figures for 2026. For lower-volume keywords where single-year averages are sensitive to month-to-month noise, comparisons use the first six months of the window against the most recent six months, and this is flagged explicitly in the relevant tables.

No data normalisation, weighting, or composite indexing was applied. All figures are taken directly from Google Ads and are independently reproducible by running the same keyword list through the Google Ads Keyword Planner UI or via the DataForSEO API, using the parameters listed above.
